- Majoring in Management Information Systems and working for an IT company, my career plans were pretty much like any other student having an IT background. However, through various volunteering events on campus, I felt deeply connected to the work I was doing and better utilize my talents. Over time took the decision to work for a non profit.
- Currently working as a Service Superisor (Educational Support) for the Collaborative and as an intern for WhyArts my experience has been highly rewarding. I really enjoy the work I do, and utilizing my time and talents to help those in need is something that gives me immense joy.
- I have had the priveledge to work with a lot of exciting people and be part of interesting and diverse projects which include arts programming for kids, at-risk youth, teens and adults with physical and mental disabilities, as well as project management tasks, volunteer recruitment and Information technology related.
- This rich experience has me wanting for more and once I graduate in Spring 2017, I wish to continue working in the non profit world as well along with working in the IT sector.
Baxter Arena, home of the UNO Mavericks currently in the second year of its operation, has a lot of events going on - from concerts, graduations, hockey, basketball etc, and working there is exciting and at the same time challenging.
- Between 3000 to 8000 people come for any particular event and all of us at Baxter arena work together as a team to provide the best experience to our guests.
- During one such major event, we were attempting to host the biggest concert we have ever had in the past, and during that time we were short on staff. But with dedication and team work we were able to achieve our goal and recieved appreciation from our managers and guests as well. Below are some of those emails:
Migration to employee scheduling tool:
I worked under the guidance of my supervisor to plan and setup up the working environment for the application ‘When I Work’ (http://wheniwork.com/) which is an online Employee Scheduling Software.
I worked under the guidance of my supervisor to plan and setup up the working environment for the application ‘When I Work’ (http://wheniwork.com/) which is an online Employee Scheduling Software.
- The existing process of assigning shifts and keeping track of information of 40+ employees done manually using emails and multiple exchanges of messages was not efficient.
- We worked on the initial transition process which involved configuring the application, populating it with all the relevant information and testing it before we can go live.
- Information such as employee details, schedule details, pricing, work locations etc were added and initial knowledge transfer to the administrative staff was carried out so that they can learn the new tool.
- We have currently planned for training programs for all artists/employees for the tool, which has a mobile application as well in addition to the web based application. We plan to go live with the new tool starting Jan 2017.
- Some benefits of using the tool are that we never need to worry about keeping track of random time-off and shift change requests, ability to send employees instant updates, easy communication between employees, ability to filter out and analyze the schedules etc.
I work as a Service Supervisor (Educational Support) for the Collaborative, Office of Civic and Social Responsibility, which is a student-led program created to organize and coordinate university-wide community service and volunteering opportunities. The goal of this program is to help students create positive social change in our community and develop new skills that will benefit them during their college years and beyond and currently we have a very diverse work force.
- As a strong supporter and believer in diversity, I try my best to engage in meaningful conversation with my team mates and take time to learn more about their cultural backgrounds and interests.
- I make sure to interact with my team members outside of work as well in order to make them feel more comfortable. At the office, we have had retreats and potlucks from time to time so that we can experience different cultures.
- I enjoy learning basic phrases in new languages from people from other parts of the world working with us to make them feel comfortable, while at the same time teaching them words in the languages I know.
- I make friends with everyone and never discriminate based on beliefs, religion, sexual orientation or race, to create an inclusive environment of mutual trust and respect.
